English Learners

The District supports English Learners through dedicated and integrated instructional models, which focus on the California Common Core State Standards and the English Language Arts/English Language Development Framework of California.

English Learners throughout the Buckeye District receive meaningful and relevant instruction in English suitable to their English proficiency level.  At the elementary level, the language curriculum  On Our Way to English is taught to English Learners by certificated teachers in small group settings; at the middle school level English Learners receive English language instruction via their Houghton Mifflin Harcourt language arts curriculum, Collections.

The English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC) are the State mandated measures used to determine an English Learner’s English proficiency level.  The ELPAC is aligned with California’s 2012 English Language Development Standards, and is given annually in early spring of the school year.  The District is required to provide an initial ELPAC assessment to those students whose home language is reported by parents/guardians as other than English.

At Buckeye Union School District, we strive to provide exceptional learning opportunities for our English learners. We celebrate the over 25 home languages spoken and our school district. We are committed to working with you and your child to provide English language support; in the hopes that each child will be able to be reclassified as English proficient before they begin high school.

If you have any questions regarding the English Learner program at Buckeye Union, the English learner status of your child, or how to best support your child’s language development, please feel free to contact Anne Muse-Fisher, English Language Coordinator, by email at AMuseFisher@buckeyeusd.org.

ELAC/DELAC Meetings

Each year, the Buckeye Union School District provides outreach to families of English Learners. English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) and District-level English Learner Advisory Committee (DELAC) meetings are held during the school year, informing families of English Learners about the District’s academic progress, District programs, and opportunities.  These forums also provide a platform for questions and information that is school-site specific. We hold two ELAC meetings a year at all sites with 21 or more English learners in attendance. Look for notifications from your school for upcoming ELAC meetings; we would love to see you at the next meeting!
