PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE:
February used to be a month that conjured up images of hearts, flowers, and lots of love, but as a middle school principal, I have found that February ushers in so much more than Hallmark ever imagined.
First of all, students have successfully completed half of this school year. They should be proud of their accomplishments in adjusting to a new grade, new friends, and maybe even a new school, but they should also be examining what they need to do to continue to be successful. This is the time of year when the high school counselors come to visit with our eighth graders to gear them up for high school (and also when 8th grade-itis begins!). It’s also a time when the 6th grade parents/teachers start to think, “Oh, no, when did my 6th graders become 7th graders!??!”
February is also a great month for learning. The electricity of the vacations is over and students fall back into the routine of school. They have developed relationships with their teachers and are clear of the expectations. Usually they start to thrive at this time of year…maybe it’s all the rain!
To further send us fleeing from thoughts of hearts, flowers, and love, state and local budget talks come into full gear. Our national economy is flailing and California is right there alongside the rest of the nation. Cuts to education are devastating, but we are fortunate to have some ways to increase revenue as much as possible. Buckeye Union School District will be offering another ADA Recovery Day on March 20. For those who do not know, we are funded on our “average daily attendance” (ADA), and we lose revenue when students are absent. The flu season is hitting us hard this year, but we have the opportunity to earn back some of the lost funding through an attendance recovery day. Teachers are volunteering their time to teach fun, engaging lessons to the students on March 20. Any student who has been absent from school this year is eligible to attend. Registration forms will be available on our school website and will also be sent home with your children. Once we have a list of what courses are being offered, students will have a chance to choose several classes to attend that day. Last year’s ADA Recovery Day was great fun and one student even commented, “We should do this every Saturday!” I am hopeful that this year’s day will be just as enjoyable.
We also have the great fortune in this district of having parents band together to form the Buckeye Foundation. This group saw a need, and jumped into full swing to help the district continue to offer top notch programs for our children. If you would like more information about the Foundation and how you can help, please visit the website at www.buckeyefoundation.org.
