Green Team

Who We Are

The "Green Team" is made up of dedicated fourth grade students who are committed to help reduce the amount of waste produced at school.

Our Goal

The goal of the Green Team is to reduce the amount of lunch waste by encouraging other students to bring a "waste free" lunch to school.

According to California Department of Conservation, Americans throw out 2.5 million plastic beverage bottles every hour. That's enough to circle the earth four times in a year!
Tips for a Waste Free Lunch

It's simpler than you think make a waste free lunch. All you need is to use reusable containers instead of buying pre-packaged foods for your child. Here are a few simple tips:

Instead Of Using
Try
A brown paper bag Use a reusable lunch bag
Juice boxes for lunch Buy a large container of juice and pour some in a reusable container for lunch.
A paper napkin Use a washable cloth napkin or bandana
Plastic sandwich bags Use a reusable container
Plastic "Silverware" Use reusable utensils
School Composting Project

The PTA has generously purchased a worm bin for the school to help reduce the amount of lunch waste. As part of the Green Team, students feed the worms lunch leftovers. The food which is added to the bin cannot contain any meat products. The finished compost will be used to provide nutrients for plants on campus.

Blue Oak’s Recycling Drive

Blue Oak’s Green Team is having a recycling drive to raise funds to purchase a fence that can secure their worm composting bin. The worm composting bin was purchased by the PTA, and will be used as part of a lunch composting program. The composting program is designed to teach students how to reduce the amount of waste at lunchtime. The Green Team will be collecting plastic and aluminum containers subject to the California Refund Value (CRV). Please do not drop off glass containers at this time.  Plastic and aluminum containers can be dropped off on Wednesday’s from 7:45 – 12:00 at the labeled bins near the front office. Cash donations are also welcomed at the front office. Thank you for your support!
